South Korea’s Posco announced recently that its crude steel output and shipments totaled 36.4 million tons and 33.93 million tons in 2013, down by 4% and 3% on 2012 respectively.
It is estimated that Posco’s output of crude steel and sales of steel product would reach 37.7 million tons and 34.9 million tons this year, up by 4% and 3% on the prior comparable period.
The company’s sales of cold-rolled sheet and coil in 2013 totaled 1.38 million tons, up by 1.6% on 2012 while the sales of wire rod in 2013 totaled 2.34 million tons, up by 13% on 2012.
In addition, the sales of hot-rolled sheet and coil in 2013 totaled 7.53 million tons, down by 7.4% on 2012. The sales of heavy plate and ship-building plate totaled 5.7 million tons and 2.6 million tons respectively.
The sales drop is mainly due to the fierce domestic competition and unfavorable foreign export environment. The increasing imports of Chinese crude steel caused a situation of oversupply and the depreciation of Japanese currency weakened the Posco’s export competitiveness.
